WHAT IS HOLISTIC HEALTH?

  • How Holistic Health Differs from Other Approaches

Holistic health is a healthcare approach that considers how the functions of an entire human being interact together.

It doesn’t use a single metric, value a single organ/ gland, spinal segment or part of the body to tell us how the health of a body is but uses as many varied systems as possible to understand how a person who is sick ( or not sick) is impacted by different environments, stimulus’s, past history, and other factors a human being will interact with.

It requires a comprehensive and open understanding of the body, its complex systems, and co-relationships.

Oftentimes it will mix Eastern practices, philosophies, and theories with Western ones.

The ultimate goal of holistic health is to take a widespread and full approach to helping someone reach a higher state of health rather than medicating, treating, or focusing on 1or few area.

What better way to describe holistic health than with a holistic health quote that describes holistic health?

“Holistic health is not just about the absence of illness; it's about the presence of wellbeing in mind, body, and soul." - Unknown

UNDERSTANDING WHAT HOLISTIC HEALTH IS

A holistic system doesn’t look for illness in one area. It looks at a complete person in how different systems will impact the overall well being instead of narrowing the field of vision for just 1 singular measurement.

An example of this, is when I was personal training a client she was going through a very hard time with her relationship ending.

The stress of that relationship resulted in her not eating anything.

She lost weight rapidly, but was she healthier?

If the doctor who told her to lose weight saw her, he might tell her…

“GREAT JOB! You’re losing the weight!”

But he wouldn’t have any idea that she was heart broken, worried, malnourished and mourning her divorce.

HOW HOLISTIC HEALTH DIFFERS FROM OTHER APPROACHES

The person’s mind, body, soul and how they all work together is the focus of holistic health.

Not to be confused with “naturopathic medicine”, often administered by a Naturopathic Physician.

A naturopath may use more “natural” remedies to address a measurement but it may not mean they use a holistic approach.

Example of Holistic Areas Naturopath May NOT Work In

  • Mental/ Emotional Well Being
  • Cardiovascular Exercise
  • Mindfulness Practices
  • Weight Lifting/ Resistance Training
  • Flexibility Work
  • Energetic Practices
  • Food/ Macro/ Energy Balance

As you can see there are a lot of things that go into the whole human being for holistic health.

At the same time, a personal trainer may not offer a holistic approach.

Examples of How a Personal Trainer May NOT Be Holistic

  • Suggest Unrealistic Workout Length or Intensity for a person’s energy levels
  • Design Overly Complicated and Stressful Programs
  • Not considering social components to eating out
  • Not consider emotional coping in a nutrition program
  • Not pick fun or enjoyable activities for a client to engage in
  • Push a stressed individual into increased pain or stress

A holistic health approach will consider the different elements a human being has to interface with not just in the doing but in the social, mental, and chemical levels that make up a person.

As a professional making recommendations, it’s easy to know your best strategies for getting a client a result.

But it’s more difficult to consider all the variables they have to encounter with making those recommendations.

A holistic health approach looks at all these factors at the same time and chooses the path that gives the most benefit to mind, body, and spirit while working towards a health goal.

HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE HOLISTIC HEALTH?

AN INCORPORATING HOLISTIC HEALTH QUOTE

"Holistic health is about embracing all of you – your physical, mental, and emotional self – and taking conscious steps towards a balanced and harmonious life." - Unknown

EXAMPLE WAYS TO INCORPORATE HOLISTIC HEALTH

There are 3 Main Bodies to Incorporating Holistic Health:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional

They are the 3 you have been using your entire life!

Realizing they are all connected, tied together, and occurring in a relationship is the key to incorporating holistic health.

The mental body cannot be healthy if the emotional body is unhealthy.

The physical body, if unhealthy, cannot keep the emotional body healthy.

In your exploration and practice of incorporating holistic health seeing each as a priority that needs to be tended to is key.

10 EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL HOLISTIC HEALTH AREAS OF WORK

  1. Adequate Nutrition: protein, carbs, fat
  2. Proper Vitamins/ Minerals in your diet
  3. Getting Enough Sleep

  5. Cardiovascular Training
  6. Strength Training
  7. Having healthy body fat levels
  8. Having enough lean body mass and bone density
  9. Drinking enough fluids (proper fluid volume)
  10. Healthy Moving Joints

Having a holistic health expert who understands how all these work together can give you suggestions that allow you to reach many of these outcomes with the least time/energy required.

This will allow you to start incorporating practices that allow the physical body to be healthy and making these changes in your life.

10 EXAMPLES OF MENTAL HOLISTIC HEALTH AREAS OF WORK

  1. Monitoring Stress Levels and # Of Peak Occurrences
  2. Balancing Your Relationship with Work
  3. Family Relationships / Boundaries

  7. Happiness with Work Occupation
  8. Social or Non Social Time Per Week ( depending on the individual)
  9. Time Spent On Electronic Devices ( searching for dopamine)
  10. Night Time Bedtime Routines and Affected Quality of Sleep

Many mental problems or poor habits often become physical problems.

If a person is dissatisfied with an area of life they will compensate with feeling better in another area of life and can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms and physical issues.

This is a holistic health principle that must be considered rather than medicated.

10 EXAMPLES OF EMOTIONAL HOLISTIC HEALTH AREAS OF WORK

  1. Listening to yourself and your truth
  2. Developing a connection to your own desires (not others)
  3. Understanding what fear and anxiety feel like in your body
  4. Recognizing all your own emotions and emotions human beings have
  5. Being able to communicate your feelings
  6. Realizing when you react from fear
  7. Working through ideas of “ not being loved” or “safe”
  8. Listening without judging or correcting
  9. Having an emotional/ energy practice
  10. Monitoring your emotions around food/ eating

Our emotional state can be affected by past trauma, beliefs, or even genetically passed down.

So much of how we operate as human beings is on autopilot until we decide to investigate.

By bringing an emotional component to your wellness, you start to understand some of the deeper “spiritual” issues that affect the human body.

The above lists are not a comprehensive collection of examples you can start incorporating but will serve as a starting point as you go on your journey and often need to be addressed in a holistic health situation.

COMMON MISTAKES INCORPORATING HOLISTIC HEALTH

With most matters regarding health, there may not be a right or wrong way to do something, but there are most likely more effective ways to do something. It all depends.

PHYSICAL COMMON MISTAKES WHEN INCORPORATING HOLISTIC HEALTH

Trying to take too much on at 1 time.

As human beings our bodies and brains are processing millions of particles of data per second.

Making lots of change can be very challenging not only physically but mentally and emotionally.

Finding the top priority and picking 1 area to start making a physical change or picking the easiest solutions that achieve goals can prevent you from overcommitting, failing, and then having a mental/ emotional trigger.

Especially if you’re a perfectionist.

Perfectionism is a mental/ emotional hurdle that impacts all the bodies.

You can always add more but if you quit, you can never win.

MENTAL COMMON MISTAKES WHEN INCORPORATING HOLISTIC HEALTH

Mental health care is the most commonly overlooked part of holistic health.

A huge issue I see with my clients is mental challenges around work and relationships.

Those are commonly the same mental patterns for the person, but they may feel different.

Someone with boundaries around work will commonly have boundary challenges with their partner.

Or if they don’t give themselves what they need on the day to day, because they feel like they need to give all their energy to work, parenting, or another relationship…

They can find themselves on the couch indulging in junk food to try to feel good again.

These are common holistic challenges that I have seen and guided clients through which are mental mistakes that become physical problems.

EMOTIONAL COMMON MISTAKES WHEN INCORPORATING HOLISTIC HEALTH

The biggest emotional common mistake is not understanding FEAR.

Fear is a very strong emotion.

People who don’t feel anything are commonly in a fear state.

They numb out because it becomes so painful for their body.

As a result they are constantly looking for something to make them feel good, sometimes it’s work success and sometimes it’s a substance.

Many times for business owners, it’s wanting to feel needed and important.

Either way, the emotional part of not understanding your feelings leaves you open to mental and physical problems.

Practices For Holistic Health Quote

"The body achieves what the mind believes, and true wellness begins with a positive mindset." - Unknown

Practices To Incorporate Holistic Health

As the quote says holistic health begins with a positive mindset.

This is where most people who take the right “ actions” still create the “wrong” results.

As a mindset/ health coach, I see many people who are unhealthy because of their mindset.

The mental practice of being successful is the 1st part of having holistic health.

MENTAL PRACTICES FOR HOLISTIC HEALTH

  • Setting a clear vision for what you want for your life
  • Reading a mission/purpose statement for the impact you want to make
  • Having a connected vision to WHY you want what you want
  • A practice for reinforcing the feelings, emotions, and mental state to create what you want
  • Surrounding yourself with repetition and a support structure of others who validate what you want

Once you have the right mental environment and a vision your mind can focus on getting to work.

Without this, you can start to move in the right direction only to circle back to where you started.

This happens because the mind doesn’t get clear instructions on where it is going.

As a holistic health coach, I see this stop beginner who skips this step.

When being healthy, or changing a pattern becomes “inconvenient” they fall back into old patterns, distractions, or numbing out because the new mental picture of what they want isn’t as strong in their mind as what they’ve had.

PHYSICAL PRACTICES FOR HOLISTIC HEALTH

  • Getting daily steps in ( you can always add more, the habit is the important part)
  • Having some kind of mobility/ stretching routine to keep joints healthy
  • Doing resistance training that builds bone density and lean body mass
  • Having a plan for 2-3 meals and getting enough nutrients
  • Qi Gong/ Yoga/ or other physical energetic practices

There are many intensities and levels to taking care of your physical body.

The habit is the most important and you should feel “good” from your exercise and progress accordingly.

EMOTIONAL PRACTICES FOR HOLISTIC HEALTH

  • Setting a Timer to check in with yourself
  • Journaling your feelings/ emotions
  • Using a feeling chart on your fridge before eating ( bring awareness)
  • Gratitude Practices
  • Emotional Energy Practices/ Meditations For Clearing

Emotional practices for holistic health require you to pay attention to your emotions and let them pass through you.

Negative emotions left inside the body are not healthy for the body, cells, or hormone system.

COMMON PRACTICE MISTAKES WHEN INCORPORATING HOLISTIC HEALTH

COMMON MENTAL PRACTICE MISTAKES

Thinking you need to know what your big purpose is before you can be positive.

Most people struggle with “ I don’t know”.

Which is a mental way of giving up your power.

It leaves you in a victim state.

To be in a state of growth you have to commit to a direction and pursue it.

The further you move along, the more you will see and know.

I’ve had countless clients move through uncertainty to create what they want.

You don’t need to know, you need to pick a direction and move forward!

COMMON PHYSICAL PRACTICE MISTAKES

Pushing through pain is not a holistic way of cherishing your health.

If you are in pain, hurting, or injured from your training it may not be “ healthy” though it may build “fitness”.

Going through pain, tearing tissues, or damaging joints are not part of a holistic health program.

As a personal trainer and body worker for over 18 years, I’ve often seen many damaged bodies from trying to get fit and people coming to me with chronic pain as a result of not being holistic in their approach to their physical body.

Most people can walk without pain, but running requires more impact, mobility and posture.

Pick activities that your body can accept and learn what your body is communicating.

Pain is a communication and learning to respect the signal is a vital part of holistic health.

COMMON EMOTIONAL PRACTICE MISTAKES

The most common emotional practice mistake is taking a boundary back with aggression.

When we have been in fear, our first response is anger.

When doing emotional work a lot of ANGER can surface.

Anger is fear suppressed.

People who don’t have boundaries, or ignore their own needs or feelings are often filled with fear.

There is distrust because they don’t listen to themselves, so they believe that others won’t either.

Working through fear in a healthy and safe environment is a vital part of healing from emotional trauma and reconnecting with yourself.

SUMMARIZING HOLISTIC HEALTH QUOTES AND LESSONS

"The greatest wealth is health, and true health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being." - World Health Organization

Holistic health is deeper than push-ups, supplements, and mantras.

It’s a complete approach to seeing yourself as a whole and a complete experience and system.

Asking yourself what you need, what your purpose is, and listening to what fills you with joy.

It’s at the deepest level getting to know yourself, your inner workings, and where you come from -after all, that’s the only way to get where you’re going.

In this day and age with so many ill, unhappy, and unhealthy people who don’t understand how all these systems affect each other we need a holistic health approach more than ever.

I hope these holistic health quotes, lists, examples, practices, and common mistakes give you a fuller understanding of what holistic health is and can do for you.
